For my first year teaching, I will be in a 4th grade classroom at a STEAM and PBL school that serves students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
As a rambunctious, energetic group of kids, I want to create a learning environment that will best support their growth.
Sitting at a desk for 6 hours doesn't improve my learning, so why would I expect it to benefit my students? Energetic students need to have a seating option that allows them to move and make learning fun.
My Project
I want to provide flexible seating options for my students in the classroom. I had learned about flexible seating during my classes, but had not seen it in action until this past year. I student taught in 3rd grade, and my mentor teacher fully implemented flexible seating in her classroom. Quickly, I noticed the positives changes in student behavior and their ability to focus on learning.
Flexible seating not only makes learning fun, but it gives students something that they often lack in their education: choice.
Different seating options can also stimulate student's sense of touch- great for students who may have ADD or ADHD. One of the options I'm looking to get is a wobble chair; it can provides physical health benefits by allowing students to wiggle and move! For students who are like myself and are more comfortable sitting on the ground, the comfy floor seat allows them that option. My ultimate goal is provide enough options so that all of my students have a comfortable seat for learning!
