My Students

My students need some help learning how to read & engaging with their text. Enter Nook! The addition of 1 more Nook to add to our existing 4 NOOKS will help them expand their literary horizons & the 5 shells will keep all 5 NOOKS safe and sound!

My students are inquisitive children who attend an elementary school in an urban area of NYC.

Our class is an Integrated Co-Teaching class, which means that some of the children in the class have special needs. The class is mixed-ability and the reading levels of the students run from three years below grade level to one year above. We have a classroom library; however, it is difficult to have a wealth of appropriate reading for ALL of the children. Additionally, children of today tend to gravitate towards anything technologically advanced. This includes reading mediums as well. The NOOK Color is a fine way to bridge technology with reading. The addition of one more NOOK will enable us to expand our literature circles and guided reading groups to the groups of 4 that exist now. The 5 NOOK shells will make sure all 5 NOOKS (one from this project and 4 from previous projects) will safeguard the e-Readers from bumps and bruises.

My Project

NOOK Color offers 2 million titles for download. Having 1 more NOOK will enable us to quickly seize the teachable moments that pop up and provide the children with a text-rich environment in the content areas. The NOOK offers the children a completely new way of engaging & interacting w/new or even familiar books& articles. The NOOK Color's cutting-edge technology helps students control the story & interact w/ the text. Students will be able to expand text (good for students with vision issues) & zoom into pictures. Struggling readers can utilize the "Read to Me" and "Read & Play" features. These features allow a child (or children) to hear the story read aloud (also good for English language learners) & interact with the characters. My class is lucky enough to have 4 color NOOKS now & they LOVE them. Since we only have 4, an additional NOOK would allow one more child to use them in a group setting (such as a book club or lit circle). The shells will protect all 5 Nooks from damage.

The literacy experiences that NOOK Color tablets provide are amazing!

Your donation will truly make a difference. One more e-reader will allow 1 more child to use the NOOK in a guided reading group/literature circle. During independent reading time this additional NOOK allows one more child to have time with the e-reader & engage in a wide range of texts. The protective shells will protect all the NOOKS and ensure that future classes will be able to utilize the wonderful NOOKS!
