Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go," Dr. Seuss, the nonsensical and beloved author once said. My students need more than just a paperback book to be motivated and uncover their love of reading.

My amazing, funny, diverse, loving, smart and charming 5th graders are a great group of students who enjoy learning.

They each have an imagination larger than life and are full of just that, life. They each have a strong desire to better themselves daily, learn from their mistakes, and also grow academically. My students attend an urban school with an extremely high rate of poverty. Unfortunately, the ever important access to technology is only found within the schools. My students are extremely driven and motivated to learn with the use of technology.

My Project

My students have a love for learning right now that I hope they are able to keep with them throughout their educational careers. I believe it is my job as their teacher to enhance that love for learning. As mentioned above, my students are driven by technology. With access to a Nook, students can buddy read, read independently at their own pace, highlight information or make electronic notes they feel are important about the text they are reading, all while using technology. We recently received 4 brand new Simple Touch Nooks thanks to a previous Donors Choose project!!! My students are THRILLED as am I! Now, we want to take excellent care of them! We need covers for each Nook (4 total) to ensure quality care of these awesome tools. If we take care of them now, they will last longer and provide for more students.

Now that we have Nooks, reading is MUCH more inviting and engaging to my students!

The Nooks appeal to the technological interests of the students while still allowing them to experience enjoyment and growth that can only come from reading. We now just need the proper tools to care for our Nooks!
