Nonfiction Texts to Help ELL Learners!

My Students
I teach at a school where many of my students come from low-income families, and many of them receive free and reduced-price lunch. More than half of my class are English Language Learners, and they enjoy nonfiction texts they can relate to in their home language.
Not unlike their English speaking peers, all my students love to share what they know and learn about the world around them. Just recently my students have shown a great interest in nonfiction texts. One student in particular who speaks very little English has been sharing with me about animals in his home language. I am able to use the nonfiction texts to help build his vocabulary in English. He uses the opportunity to teach me the words in Spanish.
My Project
I am trying to build the nonfiction section in my classroom library. These books help my students who are English language learners connect the words in English to their home language. I have one student who speaks very little English. He has discovered my nonfiction texts and enjoys showing me the pictures and learning the words in English. He then tells me the word in Spanish.
The nonfiction books will be used to help build student understanding of the world around them. When students are able to see real life pictures and read about topics that interest them, they are more invested in their learning.
We do two nonfiction units throughout our school year. One of the units involves the students researching a nonfiction topic they are interested in. These books will help the students come up and research their topics.
