Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school located in Bridgeport, MI. Many of my students are School of Choice students coming from Saginaw and the surrounding areas. All of my students this year received either free or reduced priced lunch. My students love to read and learn, but most are in need of daily below grade interventions to help bridge their learning gap. "If you can dream it, you can do it. " - Walt Disney. The more you learn the more you know--Dr. Suess

My Project

My students will blast off with their nonfiction skills...with the help of two great educational magazines. With the use of Scholastic News and Science Spin students will enhance their content knowledge of nonfiction text topics, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Ways the class will use these great resources are the completion of skill sheets, discussion of the online videos that go along with each edition and will also be used as part of project-based learning experiences.

In 2nd grade, students need to read and use more complex vocabulary in the context of reading. They are also expected to read more in other subjects such as science. Many students do not have access to reading materials at home, especially nonfiction. These magazines can be read, used, practiced at school and then sent home to keep and add to their libraries. Exposure to nonfiction books both at school and at home will help my students thrive and be their own personal best readers.
