My Students

My students are interested in learning about the world around them but are not confident nonfiction readers yet. We have a small nonfiction area in our classroom library. I would like to enrich our nonfiction library with book bins for popular nonfiction writers.

I have students at all reading levels in my classroom this year.

I have mainstreamed special education students who are still working on recognizing sight words and I have students who are reading two and three grade levels ahead. I also have several second language learners who rely on heavily supportive texts to help them make meaning. Regardless of reading level, all of my students find joy in books and "reading time" happens all day long in our room. We are an inner city, Title 1 school and we are also an International Baccalaureate school.

My Project

My students love Jonathan London's Froggy series, but few of them know he's also a brilliant nonfiction writer. I would like to provide them with a book bin full of his nonfiction titles. We have read The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry, but I would like my students to read more of her books and make connections between the topics she chooses. Joanne Ryder has also written many excellent nonfiction books. I would like my students to become familiar with her work as well. These books will help my students become stronger readers as they learn how to navigate nonfiction texts. They will also be used as models to help my students with their nonfiction writing. These three authors were mentioned in a professional development book I recently read so I know they will help me as I teach my class how to read and write nonfiction.

We have many titles in the fiction section of our classroom library, but our nonfiction nook is not as established...yet.

With your help my enthusiastic readers will have access to quality nonfiction books that they can use to practice their reading skills, to gain valuable content knowledge, and to use as models for their own nonfiction writing.
