My Students

I teach at a wonderful elementary school. Brooker Elementary is a K-5 school that has been in our community for over 50 years. It is especially special to me because it is my alma mater. Brooker is in the Hillsborough County school district. We are the fourth largest elementary school in our county.

Our student population is very diverse.

The total enrollment currently is right over 1,000 students. We also have a local foster care home (A Kid's Place) that feeds into our school.

My Project

Students will dive into these amazing nonfiction magazines. These short text pieces will hold the students engagement while also introducing them to new topics. Many of the books they are supplied with in school are fiction.

By giving them these magazines, we are giving them greater access to nonfiction text and relevant topics that are highly engaging.

Students will easily be able to identify text features, which will aide them in finding the main topic/idea of the text. Another important standard that students can meet by using these texts is asking and answering questions.

One of the biggest bangs for your buck when it comes to reading nonfiction is all the rich vocabulary. Students will use the photographs and captions to help them identify what words mean or the context behind them.
