I currently teach in a Title I school in Anchorage, Alaska. My students are the most resiliant group of students I have ever worked with. All of the students come from low-income households, many of them who lack adequate school supplies, clothing, and food. Several students have experienced severe trauma in their lives. Some of my students come from different countries and are still learning English. Despite all of their hardships, they come to school eager to learn and to better their lives. My students are curious and motivated to be successful.
I am fortunate to have looped with my students from the previous year.
Because of this, I know their strengths, weaknesses, and personalities. I have a great connection with my students. What I do not have, is adequate reading materials. Since I had the same students in the previous year, those students have already read most of the books in my class library. I want to keep my students interested in reading by providing them with more current books to capture their interest.
My Project
My current library contains about 100 books, many of which are older stories. I personally buy newer books as often as possible to keep up with my students' demand for reading, however, I have 34 students who use my library. As much as my students love to read, it can be a challenge at times to find books that capture their interests. I know that books that are a part of a series and those with vivid illustrations can help to hold their interest longer. My students recently requested more "big head" books... they actually want to learn about history and influential people!
It is my goal to expose these students to more vocabulary, new ideas, creativity, imagination, and adventures; this can all be done with the help of books!
Statistically, students from low-income households are less likely to succeed in school. They do not have as much vocabulary or background knowledge, due to a lack of exposure. I want to change that! My students read daily in the classroom during a required "time-in-text." The purpose of this is to build strong, fluent readers. They also read in the morning before school starts and pretty much whenever they can sneak a page or two in. My students made huge strides in their reading ability from the previous year, and with your support, we can help them grow even more!
