Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many children and even adults do not know anything about our Nation's history, the location of our state, or even something as simple as the three states of matter. This is because Science and Social Studies, two very important subjects for the development of children, are being sacrificed to Math, Reading, and Writing.
I am one of those people who believe that Science and Social Studies should not be left out of a child's education. I work as a first grade ,CTT (Collaborative Team Teaching), teacher in Bushwick, Brooklyn. My students are a mix of Special Ed and General Ed students.
As I looked through my first grade class' library, I noticed that we didn't have any nonfiction books. How can our students learn Science and Social Studies without the proper books?
If given the chance to have nonfiction literature added to our library, I could, and would implement the two very important subjects into the Reading and Writing curriculum. My students could learn all about George Washington, our first president, through books; and then write about why he is the pillar of this great Nation's history. They could also explore the world of the ocean with Jacques Cousteau, but first we need materials in order to do so.
I was wondering if you could help give my class the opportunity to learn. Is it possible to give us some first grade level nonfiction literature of any kind? With this type of literature, my students will be given the opportunity to learn Science and Social Studies. These children are our future, but without the proper materials, where will they stand ten years from now? I believe that through nonfiction literature, my students will not only be given the opportunities that they deserve to learn, but also to dream.
