Have you seen the wonderment and excitement when a six year old opens a book to see a shark biting into a large fish or a tornado tearing a roof off a house? My students love to look at nonfiction books, but have not yet discovered the joy of reading it for themselves.
The curious students in my room beg me to read books to them that they can not yet read themselves.
(And I do, with great enjoyment!) My students are emerging and early readers who are just learning about the wonderful world of books. As first graders, they are spending most of their day in a classroom that promotes the love of literacy. They spend every morning reading self-selected books, working with me in guided reading groups, and completing hands-on literacy activities. Every evening they take a book home from my classroom to read and then return the next day.
My Project
This project will allow my students to read nonfiction text that is written for their reading level. Most nonfiction text found in the classroom is too difficult for emergent readers. These books will allow the students to learn the important reading strategies associated with reading this kind of text. Nonfiction text will build background knowledge and take them to places they would not be able to visit, except in a book. Giving them the confidence of reading nonfiction text will also assist them in their expository writing. Above all, first graders love to learn new facts and this will give them the opportunity to do it themselves!
Please help me to inspire our future engineers, scientists, doctors, and environmentalists by providing nonfiction text at an emergent reading level.
Your generous donation will ignite a fire of learning that will continue to burn throughout all their school years.
