"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his needs, is good for him." —Maya Angelou. For 180 school days each year, I am in charge of 23-25 second graders. I am responsible for helping develop and guide a love of reading in each of these learners.
Not every child likes the same kind of books.
My goal is to provide a wide variety of books in my classroom so each child may find a book that taps into his or her heart. Once I have tapped into this excitement, learning takes off!
My Project
This wide variety of reading materials will help reach those students who have a hard time finding a book that helps grab their attention. 2nd graders are innately interested in animals and people in our communities. Reading about interesting topics will help build confidence and fluency in reading.
Today's students need to be able to fluently read not only narrative text, but also informative text.
More than half of my classroom library consists of fictional text. My students need hands on copies of nonfiction such as biographies and informational text to use in independent reading as well as my small reading groups. Please help me fill this gap in my classroom library!
