Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As my students head into 2nd grade, they are working on getting more comfortable reading different kinds of materials and improving their comprehension of what has been read. One particular area that seems to be giving the kids trouble is nonfiction. They love to learn about new and interesting things.
My classroom is a worksheet free zone.
I teach all subjects to 2nd graders in a Title I school. Title I means that the school is considered to be serving a low income neighborhood. Many of the students do not have access to nonfiction materials such as the newspaper or articles on the Internet.
My Project
I need a classroom set of subscriptions to Weekly Reader so that each child can have their own copy of the news magazine. We will spend time each week working on how to approach reading nonfiction text and the students can use the magazine to test their comprehension. Our district assessments this year and the state-mandated TAKS test in grades 3-5 always have some nonfiction passages on them. I feel that the students need to begin working on reading these kinds of texts with confidence now so that their skills are sharp for next year. The students are very interested in what is going on in the world and I think that Weekly Reader would provide them with age-appropriate material to lead discussions about current events and other nonfiction subject areas. In addition, I am requesting a news play set so the students can act out the news. These materials will allow the students to comprehend the nonfiction material that they have read by presenting it in a different format. The students will also be able to practice their oral vocabulary skills by doing a news broadcast.
You will make it possible for us to avoid using boring worksheets to practice reading nonfiction materials.
Instead, the students will be reading nonfiction texts that will allow them to learn about fascinating things going on all over the world. Please help keep us a worksheet free zone!
