Most of my students have started school at a disadvantage. Some don't have books at home, and some don't have anyone at home to help them with the English language. They are wonderful 6 year olds full of excitement and wonder. Like most first graders these students love learning. I want to give these great children every opportunity to close the achievement gap.
These students spend half their day learning math, reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish.
They spend the other half of the day learning math, reading, writing, and speaking in English. Students learn better when they can learn at their own pace and with fun hands on projects.
My Project
Students love to read when they read about something they love. Learning to read and practicing reading is what First Grade is mostly about. First Graders sometimes struggle with wanting to read.
I want to provided authentic texts for students to read so they can learn to love reading.
When in small groups, we can read from the books I've selected at their reading level. Or students can choose a book at their level when they finish an assignment early. As students get to read more at their independent reading level, they can learn to enjoy reading to learn new things on their own.
