Ms. Darnall from El Lago TX is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Nonfiction Books for Young Minds!

My students need nonfiction books that can be read and put on a recorder in order to give my young readers access to nonfiction texts.

My Students

"We are here to make mistakes, learn, and redesign!" My students have heard our school's motto every morning since we began the transition to be an E-STEM magnet school, the first elementary (E) school in our district focused on science (S), technology (T), engineering (E), and math (M).

Our school is in a humble, middle-class neighborhood in Texas.

Although our school did not flood, many of our students were affected by hurricane Harvey in August 2017. I have a class of 19 kindergarten students who use technology daily. One of the pieces of technology used in my classroom is an iPod that is reserved for nonfiction books

Often times, kids shy away from nonfiction books because they are more difficult to read than fiction.

I want to give my young learners easier access to nonfiction texts in order to deepen their understanding of topics covered in our curriculum.

My Project

These nonfiction books will help my young learners take a deeper dive on their own through the use of an iPod in our science station. These books were carefully chosen as they coincide with topics that we learn about in our science curriculum. I want my kids to be able to explore these topics on their own without the frustration that nonfiction books can often cause due to the more difficult nature of their content.

I want my kids to be enthusiastic about science and nonfiction texts!

To accomplish this, I will have different teachers record these wonderful and informative texts and upload them to an iPod for my students to listen to while at our science station. A nonfiction listening station in Kinder? So fun!
