Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my classes, students discover (or rediscover, or deepen) their love of reading. One of my favorite parts of teaching English is matching books to students and recommending titles for them to read and enjoy. Students enjoy a few minutes a day to read books of their choice, and we make time to talk about and write about the characters and themes in the literature we are reading. I love seeing students light up when they've finished a good book!
Reading fuels the writing, thinking, and discussion we do in class, and gives students chances to encounter new vocabulary, new characters and places, and new perspectives; it builds stamina and fluency, but also community and conciousness.
I teach in a small town, and many students have not yet had the opportunity to travel outside of the county. Providing diverse literature, and the time and space to read, gives students chances to expand their thinking, build empathy, and experience the world outside their hometown.
My Project
Inspired by the work of teachers and authors Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher, I am planning to introduce high interest nonfiction to high school students in the context of book clubs. Helping students grow their love for reading is my passion, and it is my ongoing goal to provide students with engaging books that challenge them in a variety of ways. I spend lots of time on weekends combing through books at the local library book sale to find titles I think my students will find interesting, but I'm not able to provide the number of copies of each title necessary for implementing book clubs.
When students are reading books they have chosen themselves, in small groups, their level of engagement raises; with 4-5 copies of these books (like League of Denial or Just Mercy), I'm excited by the possibilities for lively and meaningful conversation, and authentic writing!
My research informed my plans for how the book clubs will work logistically (how our class time will be designed to support time for reading and meeting with peers), as well as best practices for structuring conversations and using literature to initiate meaningful writing projects. This project will make a difference to my students, because they will finally have access to high interest, recent nonfiction at school, and they will have the opportunity to read something at the same time as peers and discuss ways they connect with the text.
With support from this community, I am excited to implement book clubs in my classes - I believe that this will enhance the reading experience of my students, as well as provide opportunities for rich conversation, community building, built in support for struggling readers, and plenty of opportunities to grow as thinkers and communicators.
