My students need headsets, a bookcase, and new books that pique their interest in reading. These books have been carefully selected to ensure they cater to the variety of reading levels and areas of interest in my classroom.
"I loved this book," These are the words I dream of hearing every day in my classroom.
Unfortunately, for most of my students reading is very difficult and not something they enjoy.
These high school students have a variety of disabilities that affects their ability to read and comprehend texts at their grade level. Each of them is determined to improve their reading skills to be successful in their post-high school goals. All of my students, those who are college bound or career bound after high school, will need to effectively know how to read and write well to be successful.
My Project
The books and supplies I am requesting will allow my students to develop a love for reading while preparing them for their post-high school goals. My classroom uses the Scholastic Read180 program to help improve students' reading comprehension and writing skills. Read180 divides each class period into three sections:
Independent Reading: Students read independently for 15-20 minutes per day.
Their independent reading books are within their reading level and should be a topic that is interesting to the student. I currently have a reading corner and small library. The books and bookshelf from this project will provide my students with new and appropriate books to spark their excitement.
Instructional Software: Students will use the 15 headphones to listen to texts and respond to comprehension questions, practice spelling words, and fluent reading skills.
Small Group: I work with students in groups of 5-6 to practice literacy and writing skills while giving them immediate feedback on their work. This intimate setting creates a comfortable environment where students can take educational risks that develop their reading and writing skills.
