Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Special Education teacher in a New York City public high school. I teach 9th and 10th grade self-contained English and resource room. The disabilities of my students include speech/language impairments, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, severe emotional disturbance, and more. All of my students are bright, motivated people who need that extra push to succeed. I am touched and inspired by their ability to face these tremendous obstacles. My 10th grade Special Education self-contained class has proved to be particularly challenging. Most of the students in this class are emotionally disturbed and exhibit various behavior problems. It is also difficult to find materials that this class finds interesting. Another teacher recommended a book called “Gunstories” which is a collection of teenagers’ narratives describing personal experiences with guns. “Gunstories” provides different viewpoints regarding gun control. This book would allow students to understand varying perspectives on a topic that they find engaging. Your donation will allow my students to read and practice their own persuasive writing. In this unit, my class will practice forming logical arguments about issues that are important to them. This is a skill that is extremely valuable for my students. Your donation will make it possible for my students to become interested in persuasive writing.
