My students need a subscription to National Geographic Magazine for Kids and Time Magazine for Kids to provide them with non-fiction text on their reading level.
My students are amazing! Many of them have persevered through the challenging situations that life has thrown at them. They are truly my heroes! Our school is a therapeutic day school for special needs students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Students typically attend our school due to challenging behaviors in general education buildings. These behaviors are often physically or verbally aggressive, either towards staff members and/or students and themselves.
Most students that come to our school have typically experienced traumatic events in their lives and/or suffer from mental health disabilities.
The goal of our classroom is to determine effective interventions so that students can transition back to their general education settings.
My Project
My students love learning about the world around them! This year we have started doing research projects during our reading block, where the students research and learn about different science and social studies topics. The students are loving them! We have studied the First Thanksgiving, Christmas Around the World, the life-cycle of different insects, zoo animals, and so much more! The students love exploring and learning about these topics during our quiet reading time, however it is challenging to find non-fictions books on their reading level.
Your donation will provide my students with a year long subscription to Time Magazine for Kids and National Geographic Magazine for Kids, so the students are able to have non-fiction reading materials on their reading level.
These magazines will provide the students with monthly magazines about high interest science and social studies topics on the students' independent reading level. The laminating sheets will be used to laminate a copy of each magazine so the students can look at them time and time again in our classroom library. The students will also be able to take a magazine home with them to continue the non-fiction reading and learning at home with their families. Providing these magazines on the students' reading level, will add a non-fiction text rich environment not only at school but also at home.
