Help me give my students a class subscription to Scholastic News and Science Spin to improve their non-fiction reading skills, give exposure to current events, and increase their enjoyment of reading!

"Can I help?" is a phrase I often hear from my students. They are eager to come to the aide of a peer (or teacher!) in need. My students are compassionate. They take initiative. They are leaders.
My students are the future of our world.
Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world." In order to cause change, we need students to be empowered with education.
There are just around 320 students at our school, with over 85% low-income and 97% African American or African. In addition, approximately a third of the students are children of immigrants. We are a fifth-year Title I charter school, located in a high poverty area. Our supplies are limited and our families often cannot afford extra books and materials.
The materials from this project will help my students become more successful readers. Interesting reading materials, such as Science Spin, help to engage students fully with their learning!
In 3rd grade, students focus less on learning to read, and more on reading to learn.
They will read in every subject they encounter from here on out and they will be expected to understand and apply what they've read. Thus, understanding non-fiction text is a crucial step to learning for the rest of students' lives!
Further, this project will provide carpet squares for students to use around the classroom. Our room is on the basement level with a tile floor, so having these carpet squares enables us to more fully utilize our space!
