My Students

It's been thirty years since I read the novel and I can still recall the overwhelming emotion I felt while reading about Griffin's journey into a world that was so surreal it greatly impacted this reader's prospective on race and prejudice.

My students are 15-17 years old and attend an inner city school.

Most live below the poverty level and receive free lunches. Reading was never a priority in their homes and for most they are reluctant to read without guidance and encouragement. However, when they are presented with reading assignments where they can imagine themselves as the character who could possibly have the same experience, they come aboard and the questions are never ending.

My Project

After reading Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" they were intrigued with the ideas the play presented; false accusations without proof, destruction of families and communities, and giving up ones life on principle to save others from death. While challenging, it was amazing (and still is) to see how involved and interested the students were in Miller's background, the "witch hunt", and communism during the McCarthy era. The novel, "Black Like Me", is how in 1959, Griffin, disheartened by the climate of racial conflict in America, decided to take an extreme measure in order to understand what life was like for black Americans: he under went a medical treatment to change the color of his skin and pose as a black man. The memoir depicts his experiences and what it's like to walk in another's shoes. It's a totally wonderful memoir that today's students can relate to as young people who live in an environment that isn't as accommodating to all people of color.

This will make a difference not only for current year students but for many years to come.

I feel that it's important to provide students with authentic literature that directly impacts and relates to their lives. By providing a non-fiction account students will have the opportunity to read and learn about Griffin's experience. Students will also analysis and write about other individuals who may have had a similar experience in their lives. Some may even write about their own experiences!
