As a teacher in a rural, low income school, I witness my students facing challenges each day both inside and outside of the classroom. About 49% of our students come from families with low income. Several of our students receive food to be taken home over weekends and holidays to meet their basic needs until they return to the building.
For many students, our school is a safe haven away from the chaos of less than ideal home situations.
In my classroom, I work to nurture a sense of community, love, trust, and growth.
My Project
This year our classroom has been fortunate enough to get two projects funded to create a better classroom library. We have received a cart to organize books, which has been a tremendous organizational blessing. We also received level k-t leveled nonfiction library. Each level came with 5 books.
Our classroom is full of diverse learners on many different reading levels.
We would like to provide more books for each level. Right now, we have around 6 kids on one level, this leaves one child without a book or some kids without much of a choice which book to read.
An additional set of books to add to each level would provide more choices for the students and allow every child to read on their level. Additionally, nonfiction books are typically high interest, especially for boys. There are many reading skills that can be taught using nonfiction books that aren't available in fiction, for example text features, such as captions, headings, and graphs. Non fiction books also help students read across curriculum and also covers social studies or science standards.
