My students need some good non-fiction! Most of the books in our library are over 15 years old and in need of replacing. Books about “real stuff” is always a hit with elementary kids!
Our school has grown this year due to Hurricane Harvey. Our classes are busting at the seams! However, all new Blue Jays are welcomed with open arms. Our school is very diverse and our kids come from homes that speak 29 different languages! Our students love to read and coming to the library is something that they do weekly. Blue Jay families are very supportive of their kids and their school and only want what’s best for them. It’s a true family.
My Project
Our kids have six ‘outclasses’ and one of them is coming to the library. Although graphic novels are #1 with our kids, the non-fiction section is very popular! However, it’s very dated! Kids need access to up-to-date topics that they’re interested in and perhaps recognize in their real lives. Being exposed to this kind of writing will help them when they begin to take standardized tests, but more importantly, excite them to read more! Our kids are learning that the ‘books with numbers on the spine’ are the non-fiction books, so giving them access to a bunch of new ones would be incredible.
