Teaching students to read is difficult enough. As educators and parents we are lucky when we can engage a child in a story. Usually the stories that engross children are fictional stories. However, students need to understand how to read non fiction. Usually students experience non fiction in a text book or magazine. The teacher will tell them to look at the key, legend or map. But how do they know what a key, legend, or map look like? How can we be sure they are looking at the correct piece of information? We need to SHOW them. Research shows that children learn to understand non fiction text better when presented to them using big books. This way the teacher can model where the river on the map is or how to use a legend. In teaching primary aged children, it is hard to keep their attention. Non fiction big books that are colorful and allow the teacher to model reading would help to increase their awareness on how to read non fiction text. Working in an underprivileged area it is my personal goal to have my students leave with not only the love of learning - but life skills as well. Non fiction text includes life skills and the necessary information to become a life long learner.
