Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

First grade is hustling and bustling with new and exciting things. Every morning our students gather together to greet one another with a hand shake and a "good morning" to set the tone for the day. Our students work hard to meet their goals and work together to create a community of learners.

Our students come to school ready to learn and have a zest for life even though they face many adversities in their home life and community.

I work in a Title 1 school. Most of the students receive free meals. Our students come from a diverse background in which they do not have the same opportunities as other children elsewhere. They face many challenges such as living in shelters, being separated from family members, and dangers within the community. Yet, they still come to school full of wonder and amazement about the world around them. They are excited about the new things they learn and encounter everyday.

My Project

I am requesting National Geographic nonfiction books to add to my classroom library. My school does not have a library for children to read and check out books. The students rely on the books provided in the classroom.

Currently, my students rely on copies made of the non-fiction books to aide in their reading writing lesson.

To teach non-fiction reading, I chose animals as an interesting topic for the children. I only have one book that I read to the class. My students learn that they can gain more information about a topic using photographs, labels, and diagrams found inside the books. Most of the time the copies come out too dark and the students cannot see the beautiful details of the photographs. I would like them to be able to have their own copy the book to help them become confident readers and most importantly, to be able to clearly see what they are reading about.

Students learn how to identify key details from the text so they can learn and apply strategies such as, "ask and answer questions, identify the main idea, and to locate key details". Having their own copy of the book is critical for my students to practice these skills. The Primary Notebooks will allow students to be able to respond to their writing. For example, they will be able to write a paragraph about the main idea of the chapter "Bat Food", from the "Bats" book by National Geographic.
