My Students
Non-fiction usually makes students cringe. I would like to have non-fiction make students smile and think.
I teach on a rural reservation. Some students have never left the reservation to experience the real world. I would like to provide that opportunity through books. Non-fiction is now required reading so students need a variety of interesting non- fiction books to choose from.
My Project
Students at our school are required to pass a certain number of Accelerated Reader quizzes which is a grade on their report card. This number is based on their grade. Of that number, 30% must be non-fiction per common core standards. With a limited number of non-fiction books available, students will have a hard time reaching their goal.
Students that are isolated, as some of the students I teach are, need to experience various cultures and learn about their world. One way to do this is through books. Providing this opportunity for students to expand their current knowledge is important.
