My students need nonfiction titles to read and analyze in preparation for college reading. These titles will intrigue them and provide material for independent reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you found a book that really interested you? My students are currently looking for that special book that will spark a love of reading.
We are a magnate school in an urban district near a major city.
My students come from various backgrounds and various levels of fluency and literacy. They also have varied economic backgrounds. Unfortunately our local library doesn't have enough titles for all of my students. This would ensure all students have books regardless of their ability to afford them, and that they can find subjects specifically of interest to them.
My Project
We will be working on an independent reading unit. Many students don't like to read assigned books and this unit gives them the power to each choose their own piece. Our focus will be on non fiction books which often tells stories of trials, tribulations, and survival. We will be able to practice college readiness skills through discussions, analysis, and non fiction readings. They will learn how to "sell" and explain a book to their peers knowing they are the only ones who have read it yet. This will cause students to trade books independently creating an excitement for reading that they haven't experienced before.
This will make a difference because students need to be given a fair opportunity to learn regardless of financial status.
My goal is to show them that they matter, are as intelligent as anyone else, and that they deserve to improve themselves. I need them to see that people care about how well they are doing to keep them striving for education in the future, outside of the classroom, and long after I am gone.
