Help me give my students non-fiction books to read that interest them! We focus on two non-fiction reading and writing units in third grade and students lack the resources needed for this unit.
Imagine moving to a new country where you do not know anyone and have to learn the English language. You walk into an unknown neighborhood and open the doors to a school you are unfamiliar with. Everything sounds strange since you do not speak the language everyone else is speaking. You go into a brightly colored classroom with an adult you have never met before, but still, have a smile on your face. Imagine a teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are some of the students I teach every day.
I work in a large school with a very high immigrant population in Flatbush-Ditmas Park in Brooklyn, NY.
Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. My job is to multi-task teaching students who are already performing on and above grade level, to students who do not know letters or numbers. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They are all so willing to learn and adjust to the American Education system.
My Project
These materials will help my class have access to non-fiction books. In third grade we focus on summarizing and finding the main idea of non-fiction books. Without books that interest my students, they find the work boring and not interested in reading.
Our classroom library is lacking different books that would interest the readers in my class.
We could use all different genres in non-fiction! I want my students to be excited about reading non-fiction books and want to share the fun facts they learn about their reading. Please help us find the love for non-fiction books by growing our classroom library!
