Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a low-income/high poverty Title I school in Greenville, South Carolina. The majority of my students are Hispanic Americans. My students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom daily. The challenges they face never stop my students from coming to school excited and happy to learn each day. I am looking to empower my students to grow educationally and socially.
I want my students to have access to interesting non-fiction text on their reading level!
My Project
My students love learning new things! The best way my students learn is through reading. It is so powerful to see my students learn by reading non-fiction books and news articles.
Throughout the school year, I teach my students how to read non-fiction texts using a variety of different strategies.
We begin our reading workshop time with everyone on the carpet. I introduce the reading strategy and then I model it by reading a book aloud to them. I send them back to their book bins with a task to practice the same strategy while reading their books. At the end of our reading workshop time, we're all back on the carpet together sharing what we learned while we were reading. This is truly my favorite part of the day because I can see my students practicing and discovering new things for themselves! I want to be sure my students have a variety of non-fiction books to choose from. With your donation I will be able to expose my students to so much more!
In addition to non-fiction books in my classroom library, I want to provide my students with a monthly subscription to Scholastic News! Scholastic News articles are written on a second grade reading level and are non-fiction topics that second graders WANT to read about! I have used these news articles every year since I have been teaching. As I am entering my fourth year of teaching, state funding continues to get cut year after year. As these articles were once provided for me, now I have to fund them myself. I need your help to get my students this awesome resource!
