Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach young adults in the 9th-12th grade with a variety of intellectual and social-emotional needs. While many students are focusing their time on school and preparing for life after high school; that looks different for some students in our building. We work with each student individually to help them persevere through adversity such as being homeless or becoming a teen parent, our dealing with the death of a parent.
Our students are looking forward to being as independent and productive as possible after high school not only for themselves but for those that may be depending on them.
Regardless of their circumstances most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' home, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school. Others are looking to continue their education in a college or vocational/trade training program. All the while, some students are forced to deal with those choices before graduating High School.
My Project
When you were in Middle School or High School did you ever worry about where your next meal is going to come from? Did you ever worry about where you were going to lay your head down to sleep for the night?
My students are very unique and each come with their own personal issues in which they are currently struggling with.
They currently attend a high poverty Title I school located in a rough neighborhood in the heart of the South Bronx. Every day they face adversity but regardless of what they are dealing with they show up for some that may be to eat, others it may be to seek comfort and guidance as they transition from children to parents.
This project is to help me help them worry about one less thing so they can successfully take strides to overcome whatever adversity they may be facing at the moment.
