Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a middle school of approximately 410 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. About 60% of our students receive free or reduced rate lunches. We estimate another 10% to be in similar need. At 30% Hispanic, 20% African American, and 50% Caucasian, we are very diverse.
As a Title I school, our financial resources are limited, and creativity within the classroom environment is essential to tap into each student's individual learning style.
Providing the best learning environment and classroom experiences have been my mission as a science and social studies teacher over the last 13 years.
My Project
This year we have several students with autism. In particular, one student is in need of noise-reducing headphones to decrease his sensory input.
Help my autistic students decrease their sensory input with these noise-reducing headphones to better equip them to succeed in 8th grade as well as in the high school classroom next year!
We plan to give these headphones to the student to not only use this year as he learns from his Chromebook work, but want to gift them to him and his family to take through 4 years of high school as well. They are stylish enough to blend in as "regular" music headphones that the kids use today and do, in fact, function as speaker/headphones. They also cancel out noise which is our main concern for him right now. There is now way for the family to afford these.
Finally, the playing cards found in this order will go to our 8th grade students in the lunchroom as well as to my Board Game Club for use there.
