Developmental kindergarten is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to imitate sounds or hold a paintbrush.
We are part of a larger school that celebrates inclusion.
I teach behavior modification, and all areas/subject to a very unique group of students. As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to try parts of the day with their typically developing peers. My classroom is about building skills to get included. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day.
More than half of my students have sensory issues- particularly sensitive to loud noises and visual over-stimulation.
In our classroom, many students are affected by sensory issues- one major issue being over-sensitivity to normal noise levels. With disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, and various developmental delays, sensory related issues often negatively affect their ability to participate in the general education setting. Students will have independent access to the headphones, enabling them to have more ownership in their environments.
I have created this project in hopes of getting five pairs of Wireless Noise Cancelling headphones for these particular students- hoping this will enable them to participate more typically with their non-disabled peers.
