Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th grade students love math! Although Spanish is most of our students’ first language and can make communication tricky, the kids come to school begging to learn. Our students come from an economically disadvantaged background, some even helping their families pay the bills and STILL come to school pumped.
These kids soak up information like a sponge, it's amazing to watch!
They come into class on the first day lacking basic number skills and leave as linear function masters. It's amazing to watch the TRANSFORMATION each year.
In this part of Houston, gangs are an everyday part of life in the neighborhood. Luckily, the majority of our kids just want to make their parents proud and avoid the struggles so near to them growing up.
My students and I together create a super fun environment where math (yes MATH) goes from I-hate-this-subject to their favorite topic!!
My Project
Who needs worksheets when kids can play interactive math games on a computer? With your help, we will be able to have our own class set of computers and jump into a game on the whim.
These interactive computer games help make math FUN in the class and MOTIVATING.
There are tons of exciting computer games where the kids compete OR work at their own pace.
We all know the bad rep Math gets, but it doesn't have to be a drag. It can be fun, light, and yes, EASY!! These computers will help my class go to that next level.
