I teach at a Title 1 school in North Carolina. We are a STEM school, which means we have a very strong Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program. Our school gets 50% of our students from the local community and 50% of our students are selected from all over the county to attend through a lottery program.
Even though we get students from all over the county, our students are connected by their love and passion for learning.
We believe in the power of education and we believe that all of our students can learn with a little support and a lot of love!
My Project
Our students need high quality and high interest non-fiction text to read. Students especially enjoy reading magazines with dynamic and engaging photographs and articles.
Two of our favorite magazines include Time Magazine for Kids and National Geographic Explorer.
National Geographic Explorer ties in perfectly with our curriculum and students' interest as a STEM school. Time Magazine for Kids will give a real world view and connection to social studies and currents events.
Both magazines will be integrated into our reading workshop rotations. Many of our students do not have many books in their home libraries, so because students will be able to take the magazines home, which will increase access to text at home. The magazines will positively impact our students learning by giving them high quality non-fiction texts to read both at school and at home.
