My Students
I teach in a neighborhood public school that isn't truly accessed by the neighborhood. The families in homes surrounding our school send their children to charter schools, magnet campuses or private schools elsewhere. My students walk several blocks from the low-income apartment housing, next to the 7-11 where they go grocery shopping. I am their third teacher this school year.
"Ms. New Teacher, will you be our teacher forever?" That's what several of them asked me on my first day in Kindergarten, because it was their 68th day of Kindergarten and they had already been in two other classes.
Because of unexpected growth and a difficult time hiring certified teachers mid-year, my students had a rocky start this school year. Between that and their chaotic lives at home, they are reticent to trust. I'm attempting to change that by growing a relationship with them based on a pattern of stability.
My Project
Each day, my students rotate through sets of activities they complete individually while I teach in small groups. This allows them to meet with me to address gaps in knowledge, clarify confusing topics/ideas and model activities that work best close-up. But the other scholars need activities while I'm meeting with their peers.
We need supplies that will help them do meaningful work, not just busy work.
I want the things they do independently to enrich their education, not just keep them out of the way. While these supplies aren't exciting, they will be VERY helpful! The aprons allow them to do the messy work all Kindergarteners need to do, the timer will keep us on schedule, the wobble chairs will provide flexible seating in one area, the mats allow their busy fingers to create letters out of dough and the plastic sleeves will allow me to reuse color copies of dry-erase games!
