My students come from a variety of economic and ethnic backgrounds. In the past twelve years, I have had the pleasure of working with families that speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Polish, Bulgarian, Greek, Arabic, Urdu, and Gaelic. Even though 85 percent of the students in our district are considered low income, I am always amazed at the generosity my families show when something in the classroom is needed. Although they come from different homes, they all share the same excitement when they walk in my class. The diversity of our students and their families is what makes my school so special.
Every year I am inspired to be the best I am because of the curiosity, spontaneity, and empathy I see in my kindergartners.
I am so fortunate to work with students that always want to know "why?" and "how?" I often reflect on a specific lesson I taught, and remember how minutes later we are on a completely different topic. This interest is what makes this age group so unique, and I take pride in being able to be their teacher at such an important time in their lives.
My Project
Any early childhood educator knows that students do not learn literacy and mathematical concepts by asking students to complete worksheets all day long. Young students will retain the information they learned through hands-on activities that are engaging and meaningful to them.
Materials that are fun, age-appropriate, and reinforce skills that students are introduced to throughout the year are a must have in any kindergarten classroom!
Because my students are all at such different levels, I need a variety of materials that students can use individually, with partners, or during my small group instruction time. Materials like portable activity tins, math stamps, and word building centers are all Common Core-based activities that are used during the Daily 5 and Math Stations. Students learn to be independent learners and learn at the same time!
