Help me give my students the books they need to prevent what is known as the "Summer Slide" by providing them high interest, engaging books to read when school is out.
As a Literacy Coach, I well know the importance of not only being able to read, but also having exposure to a wide variety of literature. The students at our school live in a rural, predominantly poverty-stricken area so experiences are limited for them. They have shown flexibility in the face of adversity more so this year than ever before. Perseverance has been key for this school year to say the least and they have handled themselves well. It doesn't take much to fill their hearts with gratitude!
My Project
We are living in unprecedented times. Our students are surviving a world pandemic. However, there has been a significant loss of instruction because of this catastrophic event. The 6th-grade students have been dealing with the burden of that learning loss.
My project would put high interest, diverse, and engaging books in the hands of students to read this summer while at home.
This effort will arm them with the materials they need to sustain their efforts in closing the learning gap perpetrated on their education through no fault of their own. Loss of reading skills over the summer or "Summer Slide" as it is often referred to is real and detrimental to student achievement. Now it is even more pronounced due to loss of instruction because of COVID.
My order reflects books that my diverse students will be able to see themselves in the stories. As an additional goal, I would like to nurture the social emotional development of my students through these summer books. In the words of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, “Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created and recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books."
