No Student Should Go Hungry: Snacks To Fuel Learning 2019/2020
Help me give my students snack bars, crackers, chips, water and other healthy snacks to keep up their energy, focus, and motivation during a long school day.
I have 25 amazing students in a Title I school. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status, while others are experiencing homelessness. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical.”
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me.
I may not be able to control their home lives. However, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
My students are hungry for knowledge and new ideas. They're also just hungry! I am hoping to supply my classroom with healthy snacks in order to help my students stay focused, attentive, and lively. Many of my students experience malnutrition or food insecurity issues at home due to socioeconomic status and some homelessness. As a result, at school, they are often tired and need a boost of calories to maintain their stamina in class.
In my experience, I have found that so many times when a student is off-task, distracted, or unmotivated, it comes down to a simple issue of whether or not they ate breakfast that day.
Too many of my students even go without breakfast which means that for much of the day they are truly running on empty. I currently try to make snacks available, but it's difficult (and costly) to keep up this offering along with purchasing other supplies for my class. Healthy snacks will enable students to develop their academic skills with renewed energy. Many come to school hungry and leave hungry. My class has a long day between the time they have breakfast if they have it and lunchtime. They need to have a snack to help fuel their bodies to fuel their learning. Due to their socioeconomic status, many of my students cannot bring a snack with them. We are a nut-free school and students cannot "share" snacks with each other due to the allergies that many students have.
Your donation to this project will give students "food for thought." In order for students to perform well in school. They need the strength that is often depleted during a long school day
