The Careers and Technical students that are in my classes are different from each other by who they are, where they come from, and how they are going to get there here at HHS. They are very unique in what they like to do and how to do it in their own different ways....except they are on the same pathway to get started and gain a career choice once they leave Hampshire High School. The SkillsUSA competition and its related activities have given these students a special way to explore their future careers by showing them what their career is all about and to show them what skills they still need for their career choice.
If we are awarded this funding, it would allow us to take students to the SKILLS USA competition, and not have them worry about the financial responsibility. This would make sure that all the students have an equal opportunity to compete and show off the talents that they have worked very hard at developing. All of the costs involved with SKILLS USA add up and can have an impact on students and their family’s lives. This experience will allow students to showcase their academic abilities, compete against their peers, and connect socially with students of different backgrounds. They can then bring back what they learned at their time at SKILLS, and share with their classmates their experiences
In Their Own Words
If we are awarded this funding, between the school budget and the DonorsChoose contribution, our families will not have to pay for the trip. Hotels, meals, transportation, and registration are expensive. Our goal is to represent Hampshire High School well at this competition and figure out if we want to enter the career in which we are competing.
Leadership is an influence! There is no better way to
build leadership skills than to help others improve.
Through SkillsUSA we can develop valuable
leadership skills such as communication, decision making, group collaboration and problem-solving. We will also have an opportunity to meet and learn from industry professionals.
(quoted from the SkillsUSA Student Flyer)
The SkillsUSA competition is an annual event here at Hampshire High School. It is important that we represent. Our community expects us to be downstate, winning. This competition helps us solve making a career choice. When we compete, we learn if we like the work and we begin to visualize ourselves in the career in which we are competing.
