Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom, you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a bit outdated. We are still using whiteboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
At 6:00am in front of the school, rain or shine, there is a line of high schoolers running laps around the school. They run and sprint preparing for the Track & Field season. At 7:00am 6th, 7th and 8th graders meet. We gather up in the auditorium daily. I give them a glove and for the first time in their lives they see a softball. After months of teaching technique they learn how to catch, throw, and swing a bat. At 7:15am in the weight room, the boys condition and strengthen to give it their all in the diamond. At 4:00pm, the HS girls and boys have weeks of softball and baseball club over the winter, tryouts, then weeks of practice preparing for our HS Softball season. Each group committed to improve and be competitive in their respective sports.
All 4 teams start late March, and our biggest fear is that they all play the same day, because 2 will automatically forfeit.
Every league requires that the teams bring a defibrillator, and currently, we have two. There are 4 teams in our school that have a Spring season. The last thing that our coaches want is to get to a field and be told to go home all because we don't have a defibrillator. Lose because of something that is out of our jurisdiction. And lets be honest, if 3+ teams all had games the same day, my middle school softball team will be the ones receiving the short end of the stick. If we had one more defibrillator, the chances of a forfeit would be greatly reduced and we'd all be a lot calmer.
The defibrillator would also be shared between the Fall teams who are in a similar situation. We have a HS soccer and track, HS/MS volleyball.
