This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Las Americas ASPIRA Academy middle school AVID students are a select group dedicated to improving learning and independent study skills so they can become college and career ready. What I love about these students is that they go through the application and interview process to become an AVID student. They are taking an extra class to better themselves, and through the experience they create a supportive family, encouraging each other to do better academically, professionally, and socially. Some of these students will be first generation college students.

My Project

One of the most common struggles our students express during COVID remote learning is that they miss their friends. At Las Americas ASPIRA Academy, we have provided safe social distancing meet-up opportunities to build our learning community.

I am requesting the softball, soccer, and breast cancer awareness fleece blankets that will be combined with an extra layer of fleece making no-sew-fleece-throw blanket donations while creating a safe socially distanced day-of-service meet-up for the AVID students at Las Americas ASPIRA Academy.

Picture this: It is a day off from school for MLK Day, and AVID middle school students arrive at school properly masked in our spacious gym for a day of service. They are gathered into groups of two to four, sitting on each side of a double layer of fabric creating blankets for donation to communities in need, while having masked face-to-masked face socially distanced interactions.
