No Piano? No Problem: Individual Pianos for Individual Learners
Help me give my students the access to a fulfilling experience in music education. Through your donation, students have an opportunity to learn a form of expression that otherwise may not be available.
These developing musicians come from a wide range of different cultures and backgrounds. This allows for our school to provide many forms of involvement in the visual and performing arts. Being one of six middle schools in the district, it is easy for my students to feel like a small number.
Every student learns at a different pace, and I encourage each student to focus on the learning process to grow as a musician.
My students have a genuine desire to learn new and dynamic music. It is my job to provide them with the tools to make that desire a reality. As young adults of a "Just 'Google' it" generation, every student must learn about individual responsibility and accountability. This means that these young musicians must learn about work ethic and independent practice while developing a musical art form.
My Project
Every parent wants their child to learn a musical instrument at least once in their life. In class, piano students have access to our piano lab seating comfortably, up to 20 at a time. However, students are not able to take these pianos home. Especially during a world-wide pandemic, many families are at-risk and students must learn from home. These portable pianos allow for high quality learning while staying safe. This helps form basic piano concepts and build the self-esteem that they need. Headphones are great for these musicians because they can practice on their own, record themselves playing, and even create different soundtracks with the add-ons provided. As they progress, they will be able to do team and independent work to build musicianship and practice socialization. The keyboards will play many roles in the program for the students. First and foremost, it will give all students a chance to play piano at home without sensory overload. They can control the volume while they play, use headphones to block out other noises, and continue to practice without the other distractions. This will enhance the environment not only in the classroom, but in the recital hall as well.
These pianos allow for students to advance in musicianship while maintaining social distancing during at-home learning.
Our first priority is to give all students a chance to participate in active musicianship without sensory overload. They can control the volume while they play, use headphones to block out other noises and continue to practice without the other distractions. This will encourage them to continue playing without feeling as if they are being heard by peers or other family members.
