No Peeking!

My keyboarding students could benefit from 30 opaque typing masks to help them avoid the temptation of looking at the letters on the keyboard while completing typing exercises.

I teach introductory computer classes to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in a rural Illinois school.

Many of my students travel more than 10 miles one way to get to school each day. I, as well as my school try our best to provide them with the skills necessary to lead productive lives. The computer classes I teach are meant to give students an introduction to various computer programs, from keyboarding to webdesign. All of my students can type by looking at the computer. I want to challenge them to memorize the keyboard. Considering that they are able to text message their friends without thinking how many times they need to press a number on a phone keypad to type a letter. I think they can easily memorize the keyboard. However, when the letters are right there in front of them on the keyboard, students constantly peek at the keys so to avoid making mistakes. I initially emphasize technique over accuracy. Once students learn the proper technique, they become more accurate and can finally build speed.

Since I don't want my students to look like bobbleheads (looking up and down at the keyboard and monitor) while they are typing, an opaque typing mask is the one of many items to help students memorize the keyboard. I've tried using paper folders, box tops with one side cut out, and other techniques, but students inevitably circumvent these learning aids.

Our technology program at the junior high level is in its infancy with new computers and borrowed tables and chairs, which don't all fit at each workstation. In the past I have been using various box tops and manila folders to hide the keyboard from the students. The boxes and folders also don't fit well at the workstations. Students also try their best to look under and around the box tops and folders to have a look at the keyboard. An opaque typing mask for the keyboard would give a more uniform look to the room. It would be a more permanent solution in hiding the keyboard. It is a helpful learning aid not only for the students learning to memorize the keyboard, but also for those that have already gone the class and are revisiting computer classes at different grade levels. I feel establishing correct typing techniques and encouraging students to memorize the keyboard can only benefit students in the future.
