Our elementary school is a Title I campus, which services students with high needs in many different areas. The majority of our students come and go on a bus to school every day and desire respect and trust from the school community. In addition, many come from different cultural backgrounds. This is not always easy for students when striving to have attention from the one adult in the room, me. I learned quickly that as long as we work together, we can accomplish anything. My kids developed a bond after the first couple of weeks of school, and they continue to amaze me.
In our classroom, the students have learned how to help each other and not to judge.
I couldn't ask for anything better from them. They genuinely care about each other, and I believe a child can do anything when they believe in themselves. Coming from different backgrounds and having various trust issues is not always easy. However, I know they will continue to strive for excellence and better their education through cooperative learning.
My Project
My students are constantly ready for change and new ideas in the classroom. The first time I put up a reading tent in my classroom with comfy chairs was a shock factor for most! Over the past few years, the seating has gone through some hard times, if you know what I mean. From kindergarten kids to fourth graders...let's just say it's well used! What's exciting are the new and improved flexible seating options that are available for our kids now. I look forward to providing different seating options, like the wobble chairs, to help meet my kids' various needs in the classroom. As an educator, I see a need for different tools to use when students are not focused. My goal is to provide effective instruction as well as expecting their best every day. Kids will work hard for you when they see that you genuinely care about their needs. I think giving them some independence will empower them to take ownership of their learning and choices. I look forward to the future shock factor of our new items to come!
