Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I school in a small community with an amazing group of eighteen kindergarten students and their families. I say families as well because I truly believe in educating the families as well as the students.
"Children should leave each day with smiles on their faces and stories in their hearts!" ~Author unknown.
The school I work in has had a lot of turnover with staff during the last couple of years, and some of that has to do with the dynamics of the area, but also within our community. Working with these families truly makes you go the extra mile to help the families and students have a better life when they walk through your classroom door.
Many of my students are English language learners from single-family homes, have no pre-school background, and their families struggle to make ends meet. Incorporating activities and engaging learning opportunities in my classroom that follow students' homes is one of my goals when families have me as their teacher.
My Project
Students will have the opportunity to learn basic skills from counting, colors, shapes, letters, sounds, patterns, and more from moving in and around cones, stepping stones, hula hoops, traffic signs, and more. Obstacle course activities often require gross motor skills such as climbing, walking, running, crawling, jumping, balancing, and maybe even rolling, spinning, and swinging! Students will love the challenge while working on gross motor skills.
Moving around, jumping, and working through an obstacle course is so much FUN!
As children grow, so do their abilities to control and move their muscles. Children need lots of time to play and build strength in their bodies. Working on gross motor skills helps a child gain strength and confidence in his/her body. It also encourages physical activity, which is important for a healthy lifestyle.
