Be informed! Give us the opportunity to start learning and reading sciences and current events. We need the ability to research, so we can make excellent choices!
My 3rd graders are excited about learning and love a challenge!
Our school is made up of about 750 kiddos with an ELL population of 35% and a socioeconomically Disadvantaged percentage of 44%. Our schools' theme is "On the Road to College!" Every year we focus on a college and major within our classroom. I am working hard to implement the Common Core Standards and quality nonfiction reading is necessary for that.
My Project
I want to teach young students that anything is possible! Encouraging a love of all things technology, science and math is my mission. Providing them with a well rounded classroom library is a start! Some of these books will be added to my classroom library to encourage students to read more nonfiction on their own. A couple of these books will be used to teach small groups the differences between nonfiction and fiction texts. "Moonshot" allows me to add to my science curriculum for the sun, moon and stars unit. The Scholastic news Magazines will allow my students access to ever changing news articles on science, technology and current events. I hope they inspire a need to learn more on certain subjects and excited debates in the classroom. I want them to start thinking of the ethics behind choices in our world and picking an opinion that works for their beliefs. I will encourage them to begin writing opinions on subjects and citing resources to prove their opinions.
I need to teach my students to find out the current and correct information to be able to make a well-informed decision and choice.
This will follow them from here on out, whether its deciding what elective to take, what college to go to, or which bill to vote for! Please help me make research and opinion making easier in my classroom!
