Our school is an amazing place with students from all over the world: India, South Korea, China, Japan, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Egypt, Russia, El Salvador, and Mexico. This diversity makes our school a vibrant place to learn. As the ESL teacher, my students are English language learners with a wide variety of native languages from Telugu to Swahili to Spanish. They have varied experiences and enriching perspectives, along with an intense desire to learn and grow.
Although our school is a high-performing school, there is a noticeable achievement gap that I am striving to close.
Many of my ESL students are performing well below their monolingual peers, mainly due to their lack of exposure to the English language. Reading is a complex process for any student and can be especially strenuous for English language learners who struggle frequently with vocabulary.
My Project
I would LOVE to add more challenging nonfiction titles to my classroom library that students actually WANT to read. Students beg to borrow my fiction and fantasy graphic novels because the graphics make the literature accessible for language learners. I have become a huge fan of fiction graphic novels because they "hook" reluctant readers AND improve thinking skills.
Now I want to take my library and my learners to the next level with nonfiction graphic novels that provide grade level science and social studies content in an accessible way.
I have requested classics by Nathan Hale that bring historic events to life, as well as new science-based graphic novels that introduce content like space, the human body, and trees. Quality literature makes a huge difference in the learning process and in the lives of all human beings, especially children.
