No Nails in our Wood

Help me give my students metal detecting capabilities so that when we get raw or reclaimed lumber in the shop we can check these pieces of lumber for hidden metal objects which cannot be seen by eye.

My Students

My students are in high school, and like to work with wood and woodworking machinery in our shop. They build an array of different types of projects, from doing a project for a teacher down the hall, or making a bookshelf for their bedroom. We have several students that really get into doing stuff for themselves. In some cases, they really enjoy helping others by fixing something for them or building something from scratch. I enjoy being in the shop helping my students figure out how to overcome little problems as they progress through the difficulties of their projects.

My Project

In our shop we often get reclaimed materials from old barns or houses that will have broken off nails and screws embedded in the lumber. These nails or screws often are unnoticed, which can cause damage to our saws or planers by dulling blades or creating a very dangerous kickback situation.

I have requested two metal detectors so that when we get raw or reclaimed lumber in the shop we can check these pieces of lumber for hidden nails and screws.

Many times we also receive new lumber from local Mom-and-Pop sawmills and have basically the same problem. If a tree was removed from someone's yard and made into lumber, that tree may have nails embedded in the tree and can make it into our shop for my students to mill and make into a project.
