My students bring a smile to my face everyday. They love coming to school to work with their peers and learn new ideas and concepts. They are lively, hardworking, caring, energetic and always eager to learn. They love to move, create, develop and engage in their learning.
My kindergartens are so exited about learning, I hope to foster an environment that will allow them view their first schooling experience as fun and filled with love.
I teach at a Title One/Star school, where many of my students come from low-income families. We teach to a high population of English Language Learners and military. Our students come to school to be accepted, loved, encouraged and challenged academically.
Our school's mission is to guarantee that every child will learn. I hope to inspire my authors, illustrators, scientists and mathematicians everyday.
My Project
My students love the listening center. It is another opportunity in my classroom for my students to be immersed into literacy. Every week all students are able to listen to a familiar or themed text. Following the reading my students then write about their reading. They can write about the story elements: characters, setting, problem and solution, retell the story with the beginning, middle and end or rate the text and tell why they gave it that score.
Listening Center is a powerful tool for my English Language Learners.
It provides a model of fluent reading and introduces new vocabulary. The listening center helps my ELL students connect the sounds of their second language with the print on the page. It also allows my students to hear a story multiple times - the repeated readings have a significant impact on word recognition, fluency and comprehension.
One thing that takes time away from the listening center is untangling all of the headphone wires. It is a mess! The wires are so long that they get caught under and around their little chairs. We spend a few minutes each rotation trying to organize the headphones for the next group. The wireless headphones would allow my students to immediately partake in their listening center with out the distraction of the wires. The wireless headphones will also my English Language Learners more time listening to the text being read aloud.
