Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come in ready and excited to satisfy their curiosity and grow into a more knowledgeable person. As a teacher of four freshmen classes and a maturing senior class preparing to graduate to the next step of their lives, it is amazing to see how their curiosities only grow as freshmen to seniors with more questions they seek answers to.
As developing scientists, the students' curiosities only grow larger throughout the school year.
Our student body consists of more than 90% coming from a low-income family background in which about 80% of the students are Hispanic. Despite whatever background and family they come from, the students strive and desire to learn, seek answers, and reach toward becoming undergraduates in college where they can learn even more answers in a wider lens.
My Project
If you've ever been to Chicago, you know that the weather can be cold one day and hot another, and when it's hot, it is sizzling! Our school is a beautiful national landmark in which the front windows of the building cannot have any air conditioners sticking out of the windows. In addition, our building does not have a central air conditioner but a big central fan that we call a chiller that tries to cool down the classrooms. To add to this, we cannot control the temperature in our classrooms, so when our room is very hot, especially since we have big windows in our classroom, it is burning hot.
My students need a portable air conditioner with a fan to cool down our classroom to help them concentrate better in the classroom on sizzling hot days.
We all know that when we are very hot, it's very hard to concentrate on what it is we need to do, not to mention the desire to just sleep cause of the high temperature or the danger of dehydration! The portable ACs are allowed in the classroom since the AC does not stick out of the windows of the national landmark school. As a plus, the portable air conditioner also comes with a heating option as well to use on those cold days in the classroom.
