Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a small, Title I-funded high school located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, NY. We are located in "Asthma Alley," and sandwiched between two major urban bridges - the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
All of my students are recent arrivals to the United States and English language learners.
They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.
Many are on public assistance; many others are barely surviving. Yet, my students are expected to meet the same educational standards as more affluent students of New York.
My Project
"I'm so hungry," is a phrase every parent of a teenager hears almost daily. When my students tell me this, I know they can't work at their best.
Sometimes my students just need to stop and have a snack before they can carry on.
As recent immigrants, my students face many uphill struggles. They must acclimate to a new culture, learn a new language and all of the subject matter for each discipline. My task as a teacher is to remove all barriers to student learning and make complex concepts accessible to all. If students are distracted by empty stomachs, it becomes nearly impossible to teach or for students to retain important information. We must first meet our students' life essential needs before we can begin to impart knowledge.
Having a collection of snack foods like chips and trail mix in the classroom will go a long way toward eliminating hunger as a barrier to learning. Having access to snacks such as nut bars and fruit snacks at the end of the day will often be the difference between being focused and on task, and distracted by hunger. With your generosity, I will be able to provide a snack that will keep my students on track and ensure that the learning process is successful. All of the growling stomachs, as well as myself, thank you most sincerely for your support.
